Frequently Asked Questions

How are wheat varieties chosen?

Our varieties are chosen by you. Golden Prairie has dedicated over a 1,000 acres of its farm solely to wheat for wheat grass. We have worked closely with Colorado State University and our customers who have told us what works best. These include yields, flavor, color, and growing time.

How do you ensure the same lot number?

At harvest, we send samples of multiple varieties grown on farm to our buyers. Once the variety that has the best growing characteristics has been chosen by our growers we begin to test, clean, process and package that chosen lot. At that point, we are able to guarantee this same lot number for 14 months. After that time, we begin the process again with new crop.

How does trucking work?

All customers are responsible for their own trucking. We provide a list of proven freight companies we regularly see on our family farm. Rates vary greatly, so we suggest that you take bids from several companies. Of course, you are welcome to use you own freight company as well. We often have inventory in stock but appreciate one week to have orders ready for pick up.

Why do you grow hard red winter wheat?

Our growers have told us consistently that this is the species that works best for wheat grass. It stools at a young stage creating multiple leaves which in turn creates higher yields.

Is wheat grass gluten free?

Yes, gluten is not developed in the vegetation of the plant, only in the of wheat. Since wheat grass is harvested in the vegetation stage, gluten is never produced.

What does Golden Prairie do to maintain sustainability on their farm?

Unlike conventional farms that use synthetic fertilizers all our fields are fertilized with natural compost. Additionally we grow cover crops, i.e .organic yellow clover and triticale, which not only build our soil health and add nitrogen, but helps to prevent erosion from both wind and water events.
